Has BlogCatalog Gone Down Hill?

Postby Sheryl Loch » Sat Oct 10, 2009 11:50 am

Yesterday, I was on the hunt for new blogs to look at, read....
I went over to Blog Catalog and went into the groups section.
Surely there must be tons of groups that would be sorted a bit by topic. I thought once I found a topic then I would find some new blogs with mini descriptions...

I did find groups....Many of them were loaded with people asking you to comment on their blogs, grab their RSS Feed, even write post about their blog on yours....
That would be fine but, I got tired of wading through the Blogspot blogs.
Holy cow, is BlogCatalog only for free hosted blogs?

I know that other people have their self hosted blogs somewhere in there. Maybe all the other people with self hosted blogs don't go there because they are also tired of wading through the junk.
Maybe I am just looking in the wrong place to find new blogs to read since I want good blog descriptions & better yet sorted by post with a description so, I can find what i want rather than wasting time clicking.

I hardly ever go over there because when I signed up they rejected my blog & it kinda PMO. Yes, my SherylLoch.com blog was rejected so, I never even tried to get any others listed.

Now this really is getting very strange Sheryl, I'm going to start sleeping with tin foil wrapped around my head in case you are reading my thoughts ;) I've had this same topic on my 'to blog about' list for a while now. I'm going to post it today since you have have my back :P

Brian,
If you put a foil wrap on your head...We want pictures!

I am heading over to your blog post Can We Live Without Blog Directories. I'll make sure that all those directory lovers don't come after you. But, they must see how messed up it is to give a reciprocal link on a blog that has PR just for a link that will never be found by members or search engines. Oh and the fact that the link they give you on their site is on a PR of 0 - ZERO, Nadda, Nothing!!!!

I was thinking that we had hit on this topic once before. I found the post Is It a Fair Trade. It's not just about Blog Catalog but, it's in general about all those directories that want a reciprocal link.

The directory sites are why I wanted the Blog Co-Op are set up like it is. A mini description about your article so people can find what they want, no spam sites, & the SE bots actually find the post & links.
I know seems odd :lol:

That's funny, I just read that entire exchange on Is It A Fair Link Exchange? and I can't remember the conversation. We sound pretty smart though ;) I'm going to link to it in my comments section. Good stuff

Offtopic: BTW, If our conversations keep going on that long I'm going to get one of those computer programs that read text. That was a lot of reading :lol:

I haven't had much to do with that mob for ages. I still get emails from people asking me to read some post or other but I pretty well ignore those.

You know Sheryl, if you're ever stuck for a good blog to read, you can also come over to one of mine. :roll: :lol:

@Brian,
Hey, we did, I mean DO sound smart because we got lucky, no, I mean we are smart.
I want one of the programs that types as you talk. The reading doesn't bother me but, the writing drives me nuts. I do wonder if I would cuss as much while talking out a post as I do writing one out. ;)

@Sire,
I so wish I could have just went to one of your blogs. I am sure it would have been a much better time. I was looking for some niche specific blogs & thought I could find them at BC. Boy was I wrong.

My Blog Log is Closing

Postby Sheryl Loch » Wed Dec 23, 2009 12:06 am

Well, I just read to articles saying that MyBlogLog is closing in January.
ReadWriteWeb
AND
Search Engine Land

I can say that it will not really be any big loss to me if it closes. I just wonder if Blog Catalog is far behind?
I sure don't know anyone that uses Blog Catalog anymore. It's full of trash & blogspot. That would make me think that it would not be worth their money to keep it open...Unless they think that all the MyBlogLog people will rush over there.
