What Images on Your Site are Indexed by Google

Postby Sheryl Loch » Mon Sep 07, 2009 3:20 am

Have you ever wondered if Google has indexed images from your site? I mean everyone talks about adding pictures so you may get some hits as people search for images.

Maybe you have no idea how to check.

I have 2 ways that may help you out. You can see what images Google indexes and the text they have placed with the pictures.

The 1st way is to go to Google Images and place site:yourdomain.com in the search bar.You do have to place your domain where it says 'yourdomain'. Google is smart but, not that smart.

You can also just place
http://images.google.com/images?q=site:yourdomain.com in the URL bar at the top of your browser. (again place your domain in there).

I have noticed that many images that had been indexed for one of my sites are now gone. I really have no clue as to why they vanished from the Goog Images pages.

Now mind you, it could be that some photo's are being pulled by my Photo Dropper plug in & they are listed under the Flickr domain in the link they are pulled from. I could correct that & download the images & re upload to my server but, seems like a pain if I still give a link back to the owner.

I do know that some images that no longer seem to be indexed are my privately owned & hosted on my site so the Photo Dropper Idea is not the reason for those vanishing.

Let me know if your pics are getting indexed or disappearing into Goog Air.

I just checked my indexed images from ExtremeEzine and I'm surprised there are not a lot more. There are a lot more images that are not indexed than there are indexed. I'm also surprised to see images I've never used but are on the server. Stuff I uploaded and decided not to use. I better get the naked one's of me off there. Wide screen monitor needed to view them anyway

Hey Brian,
I looked at this again & it seems that if the word Image (or maybe Picture) is in the Alt Text or the Folder Name where the img is located for the picture to get picked up by Google images.

But, pictures that had the word Picture or Image in the Title did not seem to show up.

Now, there may be more to it but, so far that is what I can tell.

I know that some big names were telling people to use the Photo Dropper plug in so you could put images on your site easily & have pictures get indexed to bring in searches for those pics. BUT, none of the images I have loaded up using the Photo Dropper plug in are even indexed in Google Images.

Might just be my bad luck? But those are flickr pics & direct linked from flickr & are not in my Images Folder for my site.
I also looked at some pics that are loaded up directly into the Wordpress Media area of WP blogs & those pics are not picked up either. Again they are not listed in the properties as Images.

What do you think?

If you happen to be looking for images to use on your site...We probably have you covered.

Brad, Brian, & I have put together a HUGE List of links where you can find Free Images for your site, video's, or projects.

I was just looking through there today for some easy photo's that I could just size & upload.
I wasn't looking for anything to super special but, I have been seeing that 1 of my sites has been getting Google Image Searches coming in. I figured what the heck, get a few more.
