Who and What is On Trunk.ly?

Postby Sheryl Loch » Sun Dec 19, 2010 11:02 am

You may have heard that Delicious is closing. Well, there is still mass confusion as to if that is happening or not. But, that is beside the point.

Last week I read about a new site that was in Beta and so I had to check it out. It is a site that will collect links you toss out from Twitter, Facebook, and Delicious.

Why might you want this service?

If you are like me, you send out a link to an interesting article and then about a week later...someone mentions something and you know that link would be useful to them but...where is it? Yeah, try searching your Facebook or Twitter profile for a link you shared. It's a royal pain in the butt. However, at Trunk.ly you can search your own links or the links of people you follow. Super simple!

I have found a few people that have also joined (for free) that we all know and love so you can also check them out and see if they send links to topics that interest you.

I encourage you to fill out your profile so, people will know if what kind of links you normally send out.
If I can find some of the people I now follow on Twitter...I will be thrilled. I follow some Twitter people only for the links they toss.

So go check it out and be sure to leave your Trunk.ly link so we can find you.

Hey guys and gals I got some great news to add to the Trunk.ly post.

DUH, otherwise I would not be posting it here.

Ok, I was over at the feedback area of their site and they have a tone of new sites that will be able to feed into your profile. I should say they are working at adding new sites. I personally read that Google Buzz, Tumblr, Posterious, & Google Reader shares are going to be added as they can.

They are also working at getting RSS feeds...I am hoping that they mean a feed out of Trunk.ly

They have also added a Bookmarklet Button that you can add to Firefox. I have this right on my browser so, I can save a link to Trunk.ly and not have to Tweet or Facebook it out. This is VERY handy for my sites that I use as news sites (Leverage Engines or even here). I can save the link and go get it to write the story later.

I also got a tweet from Tim Bull saying that they will have a new feature for finding users coming this week. That is great news so, I can find all the people I have similar interest with. It will also save my butt when I can follow my fav people to get news links from for my news sites. It gets hard watching and searching their links on twitter. Yes, I just want their links and do NOT want to search through all of their general chit chat tweets.

My only concern is that the spammers will eat up all the ban width with 8 billion accounts all saving the same garbage links from twitter. The good thing is that you do NOT have to follow them so, you will not see them.

I'm telling you, if you are not signed up over there yet get a move on. Heck, just follow your favorite bloggers so you do not miss the cool links they send out. Yes, that means that you and they have to get your butt over there and get set up.

Go now...what are you waiting for?

Oh, you will also want to follow me because I am so freakin cool! LOL

Be sure to leave your link here and over on our Facebook post about Trunk.ly

Trunk.ly just updated some of their services that will import in. YEAH!

They have a post at their blog to explain it all New release - support for Tumblr, Posterous, Instapaper, Pinboard, WordPress and RSS. If you just want to jump in...just log into your Trunkly and go to CONNECTIONS (top right), there you can start adding any of the other sites or an RSS feed. The RSS feed can even pull the links from your blog post - This has a warning so be sure to think before you do the link mining.

Because I am a pain in the butt, I am trying to add my Google Buzz RSS. GB has a crap RSS link so if it doesn't take then I will try the FeedBurner feed link.

They have also got a widget that you can put on your blog that shows your last --- links posted to Trunkly. They have a code that you can add to your site that is like the FaceBook LIKE button and will show who else posted that link to trunkly. Only problem I see with it is it seems to me you would have to add it to each post individually. You can find these under the TOOLS text (upper right).

I also got an email that you can receive your weekly updates and suggestions of people you may want to follow. These people are people you already follow on Twitter.

I can't believe that more people have not signed up yet. Look, I just want you on there so I can steal your links when I need them. Geesh, I link out all the time but, can't always remember all of your links. I also do not want to search your entire Twitter stream or FB page for them.

Trunkly has added the Google Buzz importing.

Here is the way you can get your Google Buzz as links in your account -
We have launched an RSS connector which should be able to pull in Google Buzz links.

http://buzz.googleapis.com/feeds/{user}/public/posted

Instead of (user) type your google's username/account

You can see the request for buzz importing and the reply at http://trunk.ly/?s=4d26e545b52ff02356000323

You will either put in your Username or your profile number.

If you go to my profile at http://trunk.ly/anipalinfo and then look in the Right hand column for my connected site you will see 2 RSS buttons.

Using the above code will pulling in my Buzz like the RSS feed on my profile labeled g Buzz

If you just put your Google Buzz RSS Feed in one of their RSS plugs it pulls it in as just links & no mention of Google Buzz like the RSS feed labeled Google Buzz Anipal Info

I tried it both ways to see which one i liked better & then decided to leave it for awhile so you can see the difference.

I will be unconnecting my Facebook & Google Buzz from Twitter. That way if someone just wants a a few animal links they can follow just 1 account. If they want to see all the links, video's, and post we have then they can follow us at Trunk.ly.

We sometimes send out extra links at Twitter that do not go to Facebook or Google Buzz. We also post video's at Buzz that do not go to Facebook........I think it can be overwhelming so we are separating them & the hard core animal info people can check our Trunkly.

Thanks Sheryl! :)

I've even managed to snag Isha (on it's own) as username. So not many people from India on there yet :D
http://trunk.ly/Isha

Possibly the shortest url I've ever been able to snag for my own all my own (all Gollum-like).

The java pop-up for Facebook doesn't seem to work at the moment. Strange; I had no problem with the Twitter and Delicious javascripts.

I can't say what kind of links I'll be putting there tho, because I tweet all kinds of links, and I also put all kinds of links on Facebook.

See, getting in before everyone else has its advantages. All the other Isha's will just have to be bummed out because they were to slow!

I post a variety of links also. What is good is that we know what kind of links you do NOT post.

I didn't have any problems with the FB but, they are still working on the site so it may have just been a glitch. They are adding more and more all the time.

Isha, funny how Delicious waited so long to say they were not going anywhere. Maybe they figured people would talk about them if they just let the rumor swell?

Well, I have been using trunkly a lot!

I save a link for later or know that one of my buds has tweeted it & it is sooooo much easier to go over there & find it than to search a twitter stream. It is WAY more easy than search on FaceBook ( does FB even have a search for your profile? ).

Tonight I saw that they have made some great improvements. They have added a LIKE button so you can give a LIKE to someones link. They say it is a "Thanks" type thing. If someone likes one of your links they will see your name next to the link. Of course I went and clicked a LIKE on my friends pages so, they may see what it does.

They also added tabs on the top of each profile so you can now see who is following or who they are following.

They did remove the avitars of people who also saved the link BUT, you can see on the left hand side there is a lil green number as to how many others also saved the link. Click the green number and it will open up a new page (tab) to show all the members that saved it. See, it is all there...just improved.

When I use the Bookmarklet tool, I have found it super useful to copy or write a post in the NOTES section so, it makes it easier to know exactly what the link is about. I also tag those. You can find the bookmarklet in the TOOLS section. It just drag & drops in your browser toolbar.

I noticed that the site favicons for the links are coming in much better & that can also help you identify a link quickly.

So there you have it!

I set up http://trunk.ly/HotMoneyTips
I kind of wish I had used my name instead.
Within 20 minutes of setting up the account
I had 149 links. Pretty cool.

The name/URL thing may come into play more at some time but, I wouldn't worry about it. You could always make another one if you decide to have links just as Brian about things you like.

Of course, I will be your friend (even on trunk.ly).

It has taken me a while to get in the habit of going there to find links instead of searching a twitter or FB page but, now it is the 1st place I go.
