How do you get topics to show in your URL on WordPress

Postby Brad West » Sat Mar 14, 2009 12:22 pm

Just a question I am having a problem finding how to display my actual topics in the URL on a Word Press Blog.

Hey Brad,
I sent out a Tweet & got 2 responses within a couple of minutes! That is good because I do not use Wordpress so, I knew there was a way to put Post Titles into the URL but, did not know how.

Once you are logged into your blog - Go to - WP Settings> Permalinks > Custom > /%postname%/

This will give you a link that looks like mydomain.com/title-of-your-post

This should give you a clean url for each article. By including the Title of the post you are helping people know exactly what article they are reading. Many feel this is also important for the search engines.

The other option is to include the category the article is written in - WP Settings>Permalinks>Custom>/%category%/%postname%

Then your url will be mydomain.com/blogcategory/title-of-your-post

If you have your blog divided into good categories that include keywords this may be the better way to do it.

I am sure that every SEO on the web has an opinion about this so, I say just pick one of these 2 ways & do it. Having your article title in the permalink is a must as far as I know.

If anyone else has an opinion let us know.
If I messed up the instructions please post the way you do it on your blog.

Tweets are great but actually recording stuff so others can find it in the future if they have the same question is the best.

That is what makes a forum so great also is having a permanent record of an actual conversation, and having an actual conversation.

Yep, that's right Sheryl. Go to Permalink Settings /wp-admin/options-permalink.php and use the Custom Structure with this in the form: /%category%/%postname%/

I just use post name /%postname%/ but here's an example of category and post name /%category%/%postname%/ http://passionatephoto.com/featured-articles/smoky-stack/

Hey Brian,
I bet we are not the only ones that need a little understanding of the Wordpress permalink!

Thanks for the help on your post Using Wordpress Permalinks

Since I do not use that blog platform I was not sure how to set it up. It is very simple in our B2evo's and we have SEO people that have preset preferences & we can just pick one of their settings or choose our own.

I am thinking about setting up a wordpress just so I can figure out the back end a bit. I just do not want to have to write more. ;)
