Las Vegas Earth Hour

Postby Sheryl Loch » Sun Mar 15, 2009 4:57 pm

Saturday March 28, 2009 is Earth Hour. ~ 8:30 pm in your timezone

Las Vegas, Nevada is known for its lights on the world famous Strip yet, for 1 hour the Strip will be a little less bright, They will be shutting off all unnecessary lights.

They of course will still have traffic lights & the casinos will have lights inside but all the outside lights are going dark.

If Las Vegas can shut off its lights for 1 hour then I bet you can also do it in your own home.

Even where we live this will make a difference when we look out our window. The Strip has always been very visible.

You can see more about Las Vegas Earth Hour and who is planning Earth Hour events in Vegas.

I will say that turning off regular lights would be no problem for us because we normally just use the lights from our computer monitors. We turn those off & I will need a candle or flashlight!

Is your city participating? Ok, how about your house? Can we live without being on the computer or watching TV for 1 hour?

I was in hopes that they would give everyone candles and shut everything off in the whole valley off street lights and all. It would look unsettling from up here on the hill.

Passably a glimps into the future???

Years ago I took my wife over the road with me in my truck. I took her to California to see her Dad. We went through the beautiful mountains of Colorado, Utah and that very scenic sliver of Arizona on I-15. I was very excited to show her those views that I had been seeing for years. None of it impressed her... until we started closing in on Las Vegas at night. Those lights are what she was excited about. I wanted to throw her out of my truck lol

I have been through several big cities but, it is not like the 1st time you drive down the Strip. Maybe it is partly due to all the hype I had heard for so many years?
Now, it is not as big of a deal but, the 1st trip down those 3 miles I am sure my eyes were about to pop out.

I did like riding through places that were wide open with trees, farms, and critters. In fact Cait & I would yell every time we saw an animal in an open area & Brad would do his best to pull over so we could get out the camera & binoculars. I would hate to think that 1 day some of those things could not be enjoyed because people have littered every inch of the place with garbage, billboards, & homes until the animals have no place to be.

Reminder - Earth Hour is this Saturday March 28th!

I think everyone can stop what they are doing at 8:30 pm (your local time) and turn things off.
Just shut off your TV, lights, computers, and any other unnecessary electrical appliances.

Why not pop a big bowl of pop corn, light a few soy candles & have a party just talking to the family?

Not sure what Brad's work schedule is but, I think it would be super cool to see the Las Vegas Strip go "dark".

It would be very cool if someone could setup a video camera up high overlooking the strip and record it at 8pm when things start shutting down. It will probably be on the news but it would make a nice YouTube/blog video.

That's a great Idea Brian, I will try to get out and video it with my flip from up here on the hill. if it is significant enough, and it should be should be pretty cool.

Great Idea

Onna,
Convincing Brad to turn off everything for an hour is the easy part.
If the power goes out he is fine, he just lays down on the floor to talk with me & Cait - within 3 minutes he is snoozin'. He could care less well, except when it is 100+ degrees out & we have no air.

Cait & I on the other hand. Umm, we look out the window, make fun of the neighbors that are all standing around looking up in the sky (like there is something going to fall). Then we make a joke or sing some stupid song. After all that fun we figure out that the power has been off for only 20 minutes. That is when we ask each other if maybe we should just take a nap until the power is back on. LOL!

I don't remember allot about Earth Day while I was in grade school but, we did have Arbor Day & all the kids got a baby tree to take home & plant.
Earth Day came about more in Middle or High School.

Not sure why they choose to do Earth Hour in March rather than April 22, on Earth Day. Maybe they feel it will make more of an impact having it at its' own time.

Here is a really cool picture of Las Vegas Before and after the Start of Earth Hour.

Las Vegas Earth Hour Picture

Once you get to this picture you will notice it is Las Vegas Strip in it's full lights. Just click on the picture and it will refresh as The Strip after it powered down for Earth Hour.
